Historic Old Town NIA

Historic Old Town Neighborhood Improvement Association is a group of neighborhood volunteers in Topeka, Kansas. We meet monthly and work toward a better place to live, from arguing our case at city hall to cleaning out choked-up gutters. Our neighborhood is bounded by Topeka Blvd., Summit Ave., 6th Ave., and 10th Ave. Our official membership is anyone one who lives or owns property in this area, but we welcome any and all!

Dear HOTNIA Folks:

Just a few tidbits from our meeting Thursday, Sept. 6, in case you weren't able to be there:

NEIGHBORHOOD GARAGE SALE: We're going to have a neighborhood garage sale on Saturday, Sept. 15, beginning around 8 a.m., in the parking lot of 8th and Buchanan. Proceeds will help replenish the coffers of the NIA. If you have any garage sale-type items you'd like to get rid of and donate to the cause, that would be greatly appreciated. Please bring them to the site beginning around 7 a.m. We'll have tables set up and a few volunteers to staff the sale. More volunteers would certainly be welcome. Hi Stockwell is producing fliers, and we'll have an ad in the Capital-Journal a few days in advance. For more information, please contact Hi: himike@cox.net.

CHILDREN'S PARK CLEANUP: Our monthly outing to pick up litter and spruce up Children's Park will be this Saturday, Sept. 8, at 10 a.m. This is actually a fun little project. It's a very nice, "pastoral" park at the corner of 6th & McVicar. It's not heavily utilized by the public, but it does collect quite a bit of litter and trash that blows in from nearby convenience stores, fast food restaurants, etc. We're close to our goal of doing this 12 months in a row (weather permitting) which will entitle us to some kind of sign or plaque in the park recognizing the effort. We'll have a dedication ceremony when that comes around ... possibly in October.

BUS SHELTERS: I hope all of you have noticed the nice new bus shelters on 8th Street near Topeka High School. Huge thanks go to Melissa Powers and Hi Stockwell for having worked on this for so long. Soon you'll see additional landscaping around the fixtures, and our official neighborhood logo will be etched, engraved or otherwise affixed to the glass. This is a real enhancement to the appearance of our neighborhood and will really help promote Historic Old Town as a unique and attractive place to live.
