Historic Old Town NIA

Historic Old Town Neighborhood Improvement Association is a group of neighborhood volunteers in Topeka, Kansas. We meet monthly and work toward a better place to live, from arguing our case at city hall to cleaning out choked-up gutters. Our neighborhood is bounded by Topeka Blvd., Summit Ave., 6th Ave., and 10th Ave. Our official membership is anyone one who lives or owns property in this area, but we welcome any and all!

Re: May 3 meeting ... TONIGHT

Hi All, I am unable to come to tonight's meeting because of a schedule
conflict, but would the group want to discuss the Grace Cathedral
Parking Lot Issue. The have formally asked for permission to build the
lot, and I believe it will be discussed at the Landmarks Commission
meeting soon and discussed at the State Historic Preservation Office.
It will likely go to the city commission. I believe the city Planning
Dept. is recommending against approval of Grace's plan, believing that
there are prudent and feasible alternatives to their plan. The
planning dept. is suggesting angled, cut in parking along Polk as an
alternative to taking a significant portion of the grounds and trees of
Bethany Place. For the Historic Old Town Neighborhood(which has no
park) to loose a significant amount of greenspace and to degrade the
environs of both Bethany Place and Topeka High School would be a shame,
especially when there are alternatives. The Topeka High Historical
Society will be d
iscussing this at their next meeting. Thanks for listening. Sorry I
cannot come to broach the issue. Doug
